The Email That Took Over Her Evening

A fictional story for general education. Maya is an illustrative character, not a real client.

One email took over Maya’s evening. Her manager wrote, “Can we talk tomorrow?” Her mind filled in the rest: “I’m getting fired.”

Separate the fact from the prediction

Maya reread the message, replayed the day, and missed the conversation happening beside her. Then she wrote two lines: the fact was that her manager wanted to talk; the prediction was that she was losing her job.

She still didn’t know what tomorrow would bring. She noted one question for the meeting, put down her phone, and returned to dinner. The worry was still there, but she didn’t have to keep answering it.

Try asking: What do I know? What am I predicting? What is one useful next step?
